Questions

May 23rd, 2011

In response to Jennifer Roback Morse’s remarks to the Minnesota house I have asked them the following questions. I post a screen shot of them here since NOM and the Ruth Institute are generally not interested in open civil debate. I don’t expect them to provide any answers to them.

New Picture

Gay and Lesbian people exist. We always have and always will. Regardless of what NOM, the Ruth Institute, or any of the other discriminatory organizations that continue to turn our own government against us hope to achieve. Sometimes I truly wonder what their goal really is. Is it to try and somehow cure us and eliminate us? I don’t think that there really is a clear answer to that question and frankly if that is the goal, it’s a fool’s goal because it can never be achieved. More Gay and Lesbian Americans are born everyday. Trying to rid America of us makes about as much sense as trying to get rid of everyone with red hair.

So if we aren’t going away what sort of protections do we deserve if not marriage? The reality of the mater is that we do fall in love. We do have children. We do build lives and families together. We buy homes together. We go on vacations together. We worry about paying the bills together just like any other family. Is it right that when one of us dies we have no say over burial or that we have to pay gift taxes on the things we bought together as a couple? If one of us becomes sick do we not have a right to visit our partner? Should we not have any rights to the children we may have spent years raising together simply because the state won’t allow us to adopt our partner’s biological child?

These are questions that can’t be answered by a simple contract other than that of civil marriage. Contracts other than marriage can be and often are challenged in court by family members that may not approve of the same sex relationship.

Without marriage are we just supposed to live a life without love, in solitude, and unhappiness? If you deny us marriage, then what will you allow?

Technical Difficulties

image Just as we were getting back to posting last week, my web host decided it wanted to have technical difficulties. So if you’ve stopped by and only gotten a pretty white load of nothing, that’s the reason. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still pretty happy with my host service, Ipower.

Work, Work, Work…

When WordPress 3.0 went live I immediately went through and updated both Vast Variety and my other blog, Foederati. I should have known better to be honest. There are almost always bugs and holes any new software package no mater who it comes from and what it does. I should have waited a couple of months and let them clean all that up. But no, I didn?t.

Now don?t get me wrong, I?m not unhappy with WordPress or 3.0. In fact I actually greatly enjoy many of the new features that it has. Unfortunately, even after about 5 years of web site design work and a couple of years of blogging, I still have much to learn about security.

Within the last week or so both sites had somehow gotten a malicious script uploaded to them, I believe through a security hole in a plugin. The script would redirect anyone visiting either site to a third party site I have no connection to and would then proceed to run malware on their computer. Fortunately I was able to figure this out pretty quick and remove the attacking code.

Unfortunately however, this has forced me to start from fresh WordPress installations for both sites. I do have almost all of the old posts and content and will be uploading them to both sites over the next few weeks, but it certainly means a lot of extra work. Oh, well, the price one pays for not paying attention to web site security. I am also doing a significant amount of reading, intended of course to correct any security holes I may have on the site.

Post It

I want to apologize for my lack of posting activates lately. Work has been pretty crazy ever since I came back from vacation and I just haven?t had much time to sit down and actually write. I will be back however, starting next week.

A lot has happened recently, from the death of Senator Kennedy, to the special election in Iowa house district 90. I have lots of things to write about. So until Monday, I hope everyone has a great holiday weekend, and I look forward to getting back to writing.

Site Updates

Word Press 2.8 was released recently and I finally went about the task of upgrading the site. Many of the changes in 2.8 had to deal with how Word Press handles themes, plugins, and widgets and that required a lot of updating in order to get everything to work properly. For a short time yesterday I couldn?t get my links widget to work. =(

Everything seems to be back up and operational now and I?ve also added a few new features to the site.

One new item is the Polling widget that you now see in the first sidebar. Scrolling down further you?ll find Three new RSS feeds, one is the PR Newswire USA feed and the other is the PR Newswire Iowa feed, and I?ve added a feed for The Pajama Pundit, a great political blog with a spectrum of view points. I?ve moved the Amazon MP3 download portal to the 2nd sidebar as well as the ?What am I reading? block.

You will also now find this navigation block at the bottom of the site to make browsing older posts a little easier.

I?ve also added a new feature to my posts that should make it easier for folks to share them if they like them.

I hope everyone enjoys the updates and be sure to tell your friends about us.

Busy Week

I know, I’ve been really quiet this past week. I got a little sidetracked. I bought a new car Thursday night after test driving it on Wednesday. I traded in my 95 Pontiac Bonneville. The new car isn’t really that new, it’s a 99. It is also a Pontiac Bonneville. It is even the same color as the old one. I’ll get some pictures posted here in a few days and everyone can have a laugh at my predictability. If anyone in the local area is interested in a car you might give Randy a call at Wes Finch.

While I was side tracked we had some interesting happenings in the news.

Obama passed the 100 day mark as President. I’ll be making the obligatory 100 days post in a day or two, looking back on my impression of how he has done, and where I feel he is going. I’ve been happy with most of his actions but not everything.

The H1N1 (Swine) flu has, as of this posting, spread to 22 states, including Iowa. The Marshalltown school district, which is only about 30 mins north of me, will be shut down for the next 10 days as a handful of students are suspected of having contracted the virus. I’m not all that surprised that it is in Iowa, but it was a tad unnerving to hear that it was so close. Many of the employees at the factory I work for live in the Marshalltown and Tama areas.

Chrysler was forced into bankruptcy because several of the hedge funds that they owed money to thought they would have a better chance in bankruptcy court and thus refused to make a deal. Something tells me that they might be in for a bad surprise. Word is going around that they want to complete the bankruptcy procedures in about 60 days, which I don’t think has ever been done before with such a large company. I have to admit I’m a tad concerned about the governments involvement in the deal overall but I understand it. There is already taxpayer money on the line due tot he past bailout cash that was handed out, and there are thousands of jobs online as well. If the jobs can be protected and the company be taken through quickly enough that the government can quickly and safely get it’s hand out of the automotive cookie jar, then I think we will better off. But the government must part itself of interests in private companies as soon as possible.

The dome on the training facility of the Dallas Cowboys collapsed over the weekend, trapping several people. Four people ended up going to the hospital.

Well that’s a quick wrap up, I’ll be definately trying to post more in the coming week. Thanks for stopping by and please everyone feel free to post a comment or two, even if it’s just to say hi.
