Homo-rality

February 20th, 2009

Contrary to what some may believe, being gay doesn?t sever a person from morality. I am not out to convert anyone, recruit anyone, and I am not preying on children, but I am supposedly?

?the greatest threat to America?

Everyone that tries to tell me that being a homosexual is wrong is relying on one thing, their religious beliefs. It seems to be nearly impossible to divorce any discussion about the rightness or wrongness of homosexuality from religion, because when you do, the people against it have nothing to base their argument on, and any good debater will tell you that you don?t win a debate by bringing God into it because it?s a cop out. God is all mighty, he can do anything, so any argument against that is moot. It comes down to biblical passages written by men who were ?under the influence of God? and ?can?t be wrong?. Can someone name me one living human being that isn?t ever wrong about something? How about naming one human being that isn?t living that was never been wrong about something, and yes I know that the first answer to that question is going to be Jesus Christ, but then in John 10:30 Jesus says?

I and my Father are one.

Does that mean that Jesus wasn?t human after all?

Personal Update

So, It’s been a while since I posted anything on this here blog thing-a-ma-jig, which means that I’ve been pretty active in other things.

Outside of work the one things that takes up most of my time is the game shop, Multiverse Comics & Games. Being a 1/3rd partner in the business for the last few months has certainly been an adventure, as well as a learning experience, and I’m looking forward to many more years with it.

I also just finished with the refinancing on my house. That was sure mind racking experience. At one point I thought I was going to be forced to practically triple the amount of insurance I have on the house. Fortunately that all worked out in the end. all in all I only ended up knocking about $100.00 off my monthly payment but in the long run the lower interest payment will be worth all the trouble. Now if I could just get my school loans consolidated I’d be a happy camper.

I spent most of last week and this weekend fighting my yearly spring cold. Wednesday I drove my office mates nuts with all my coughing, sneezing, and hacking. Thursday I broke down, called in sick, and went to the doctor. He put me on antibiotics. I’m not a big fan of doctors and hospitals, but I figure if the government is going to force me to buy health insurance then I might as well take advantage of the damn thing. Of course when I went to get a physical last August I didn’t expect it to turn into a four month odyssey through the world of blood tests and ultrasounds, just to come out the other side with the knowledge that I need to loose weight. Hell, I could have told them that for less money.

The unusually warm weather we are having this week has me itching to start get things together for this year’s garden. I really want to do one again and I really want to try that raised bed idea that Dad gave me last summer. Downside is, that with all the time I’m spending at the store, I have even less time this year to actually care for a garden. I may have to try conning my step-father into some “sharecropping.” Of course, I still don’t have a garden tiller. Maybe I should have bought one of them instead of a new bookcase. Oh well.

I loaded Windows 8 onto my desktop when the consumer preview was released. I have yet to really make up my mind on it. I did go back to Windows 7 over the weekend, and promptly fried my Ethernet port. At least cards are pretty cheap. I think my biggest issue with Windows 8 right now is that it is so new that very apps have been made that take advantage of the new Metro style start menu. I spent 90% of my time looking at the Windows 7 style desktop as I ran everything from FireFox to Star Wars the Old Republic.

A Multiverse of Adventure

Sometimes life throws you curve balls to test you, and sometimes you get a nice even clean pitch that you just can’t pass up. Back in late 2001 I closed The Chaos Bazaar, a game shop that I had been running for a couple of years in partnership with an old friend from high school. At the time I was working a full time job and running the shop and the two things just didn’t mesh very well together. Running a game shop however was a dream I just couldn’t let go.

Back in April of this year someone beat me to it when Multiverse Comics amp; Games opened on the square here in Grinnell. Over the past several months I have gotten to know the owner, Kyle, very well and have become a fairly permanent fixture at the store.

About a month ago Kyle, Myself, and another friend, Alex, began discussing he possibility of making the store a three person partnership. Today I’m happy to announce that last week it became official. We have a great selection of comics and games. We run Magic the Gathering and Yu-gi-oh tournaments weekly on Friday and Saturdays respectively. On Wednesday nights you can find me running D&D Encounters and on Thursdays we run Lair Assault for those that love the thrill of some serious hack and slash D&D. We have space to play and great selection of demo games available.

So if you happen to be in the Grinnell Iowa area stop in and check us out.

Saying Goodbye to WoW

catform

For the last six years I have spent much of my free time immersed in the Massive Multiplayer Online game World of Warcraft. It has consumed more of my time than I really care to admit to. For All but maybe 2 or 3 months of that time I was also guild leader of Foederati, one of the greatest groups of people I have ever gotten to know.

Over they last few months however I have found myself spending less and less time playing WoW. The game has just seemed to become monotonous and just doesn’t hold my attention like it used to do. Six years is after all a very long time to be attached to a video game. So I have finally decided that it’s time to move on and as of tonight I am stepping down as guild leader and officially retiring from the game.

Leaving the game itself isn’t all that difficult, but leaving behind the friends that I have made, some of which I’ve actually met in person, is difficult. These are people who have completely accepted me for who I am. They make me happy and are as much a part of me as my own family.

There will be a void of sorts where WoW used to be. I’m not really tied to any other game right now, although I’ve been playing a little bit more of Star Trek Online than I have in the past but my time there no where compares to the hours a week I used to put into WoW. Spring is just around the corner and I plan to plant a garden again this year, hopefully I’ll be a bit smarter about it. I’ve also been exercising more and hopefully when the weather gets a warmer I’ll spend a bit more time outside this year than those in the past. So there are things to keep me busy. And of course, I might actually get a bit more writing done now.

And of course this isn’t really goodbye to the friends I’ve made over the years. There are plans for a get together this summer in Minnesota that I’m planning to attend. All in all I’d say my experiences with WoW have been positive over the years. The friend sI’ve made and some of things I’ve learned about myself will be with me for a long time to come.

Friday and Freezing

It’s Friday and it’s freakin colder than… well… something I can’t say in polite company. Temperatures are below 0 and all through there isn’t much of a breeze, the wind chills are a real killer. When hopped in the car to get it to warm up for the ride to work, it acted like I do when the alarm goes off and I hit the snooze button, repeatedly, for an hour. In the end however it did finally turn over.

I’ve had my new Dell Inpsiron Duo for about a week now and I’m loving it. I found out that it can recognize handwriting, Now if I just had a stylus that worked with a capacitive touch screen. It does have limitations, but that was pretty well expected from the beginning. It doesn’t make a very good gaming computer, but then honestly that’s not what I bought it for in the first place. It plays movies from Netflix and Amazon VOD great however. I did manage to log into World of Warcraft with it but I can’t really imagine playing WoW with any real competency with this computer. Again, I pretty much expected that from the beginning.

I bought it mainly as a writing tool, and as a work tool. And in those functions it has definitely worked great.

Well, that’s it for me today, I’m starting to sound like I’m writing a commercial for Dell, and that’s my cue to move on to other things this morning.

Sunday Victories and Monday Gloom

Late Sunday night Foederati; the World of Warcraft guild that I’m a part of, took down two more bosses in Blackrock Depths (Omnotron Defense System and Maloriak). The night went surprisingly well and everyone seemed to be in pretty good spirits. It looks like our 25 man raiding machine is off to a pretty good start for Cataclysm. If your wondering what I’m talking about, head over to the Foederati website for a look.

This morning however, I woke up to snow and freezing rain. Not sure how many times I have nearly fallen on my butt today going too and from work.
