Talking Point – Guilt by Association

October 9th, 2008

Lately the McCain campaign has been attempting to hammer home the idea that American’s should question Barack Obama’s character and judgment based on a tenuous at best association with William Ayers a former member of the Weather Underground, an organization that performed a series of bombings in the late 60′s in violent protest to the Vietnam war. McCain and Palin want American’s wondering whether or not Obama has the same radical views as those of the unrepentant but reformed domestic terrorist.

So, this begs the question. In a nation where the Justice system is supposed to be based on the principle that your innocent until proven guilty, is it fair, in a presidential election, to try and pin the radical beliefs of one man on a candidate simply because they happen to live in the same neighborhood and both worked on some of the same education boards?

Electoral Ditch

Ever since the 2000 election there has been a slow building movement towards doing away with or changing the way the Electoral College system works. Maryland was the first state to do this in April 2007, although their law was conditional on other states passing similar laws. This is referred to as the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. Since then, Illinois, Hawaii, and New Jersey have also joined the compact. It now looks like Iowa may be following in this trend.

I understand the frustrations that came out of the close race of 2000. Had the compact been in place at that time Al Gore would have been our 43rd President. But doing away with the electoral college system in this way bothers me. Allowing the race for president to hinge solely on popular votes means that smaller states will have little to no say in the elections. States like California, New York, and Florida will always decide the outcome. The electoral college creates sense of equality among the states and I don?t like the idea of loosing that.

Of the People

Image: A model wears a dress with a portrait of Obama It seems that a lot of people are taking cue?s from the Obama administration these days. Everything from fashion on the runway?s of Rome to the Iowa state legislature.

Yes, I said the Iowa state legislature. Governor Culver recently published the proposed state budget for FY2010. Iowa is facing a shortfall of nearly 700 million dollars which has prompted a nearly 6.5% cut in all state programs across the board with some notable exceptions, like education.

State Democrats and Republicans however are not happy with one part of the Governor?s budget, and that is to dip into the state?s rainy day fund, pulling out just over 200 million, about a third of the total funds current value. They are suggesting that we look for more ways to make cuts in the budget, but instead of gathering behind closed doors, with the media drooling outside wanting to know what?s going on, both parties have posted web sites asking Iowans to chip in their 2 cents.

This is the first time that I can recall that anything like that has been done on the state level and it?s very similar to what Obama?s transition web site did before it was moved to the White House web site.

Here is to hoping that this is the new face of politics, and that governments at all levels will finally work to truly engage citizens. I?m still a tad skeptical but it?s a good sign.

  • Union Greed

I’ll be the first to admit that I believe that teachers in general are sorely under paid and need increases, and the Governor is doing his best to keep from cutting the state Education budget by the nearly accross the board 6.5% that the state budget is taking, but it just seems a tad unseemly to me that the Des Moines teachers union is asking for a 6.5% compensation increase (4% of which is a sallary increase) while thosuands of fellow Iowans are loosing their jobs due to the global economic crisis. Didn’t President Barack Obama just ask us all to serve our country and be prepared to make sacrafices in order to get us out of the economic black hole we are currently in or did I hear that wrong in the speach?

    Oral Arguments

Tomorrow at 10 am the Iowa State Supreme court begins hearing Oral Arguments on the status of same-sex marriage in Iowa. While Lamda Legal will argue that the couples constitutional rights have been violated Polk county will argue that the issue of same-sex marriage should be up to lawmakers and not the courts.

I counter Polk counties arguments with this.

    1. There are currently no laws on the Iowa books prohibiting same-sex marriage. Same-sex couples are currently being denied marriage rights by county auditors that refuse to grant them licenses. The court then has every right to step in and make sure that county auditors are following the laws and both the state and federal constitutions as they are written.

    2. Lawmakers have all ready attempted and failed at passing a constitutional amendment baring same-sex couples. It is in my opinion that they have then settled the issue and same-sex couples should be allowed to marry.

    Economy hits Home

The downturn in the US economy has hit close to home today. Whirlpool, the company that bought out Maytag not too long ago and shut down the Newton plant, has anounced that they are laying off 440 workers at the Amana plant. That amounts to more than 20% of the nearly 2000 people employed at the facility.

Also in local Iowa news today, the Federal government has taken action against Community State Bank in Ankeny and the First National Bank Midwest in Oskaloosa. Both of these banks have made loans to the ill fated and now-defunct Regency Homes.
