The GOP Fu-dget Plan

March 26th, 2009

For some time now myself and others have been railing on the idea that the GOP has been simply fighting against the President?s plan for moving the country forward and fixing our economy without providing some sort of alternative to the President?s budget.

Today the GOP put out a Budget Alternative, or at least a blue-print for one. Maybe it?s a rough draft?

After the break is video from Fox News as posted on the Daily KOS.

The Political Playground

On July 14th the NAACP passed a resolution condemning the racist elements with in the Tea Party movement. Needless to say that didn?t go over well with the Tea Party or the conservative movement in general.

Now, I’ll be honest, I haven?t read the text of the resolution, but I find it hard to believe that the NAACP was actually condemning the entire Tea Party Movement, and was instead just targeting the racist fringe elements, elements that tend to exist within all most any political movement. Elements that most Tea Party leaders themselves have been trying to remove.

So, on the 19th, Andrew Brietbart dug up some video clips from an NAACP awards dinner in March where Shirley Sherrod, USDA Georgia Director of Rural Development gave a speech, edited them to remove any context, and posted them on his site Big Government in an attempt to prove a point. Using editied video to undermine your political opponents has exploded thanks to the advent of the YouTube era.

Work, Work, Work…

When WordPress 3.0 went live I immediately went through and updated both Vast Variety and my other blog, Foederati. I should have known better to be honest. There are almost always bugs and holes any new software package no mater who it comes from and what it does. I should have waited a couple of months and let them clean all that up. But no, I didn?t.

Now don?t get me wrong, I?m not unhappy with WordPress or 3.0. In fact I actually greatly enjoy many of the new features that it has. Unfortunately, even after about 5 years of web site design work and a couple of years of blogging, I still have much to learn about security.

Within the last week or so both sites had somehow gotten a malicious script uploaded to them, I believe through a security hole in a plugin. The script would redirect anyone visiting either site to a third party site I have no connection to and would then proceed to run malware on their computer. Fortunately I was able to figure this out pretty quick and remove the attacking code.

Unfortunately however, this has forced me to start from fresh WordPress installations for both sites. I do have almost all of the old posts and content and will be uploading them to both sites over the next few weeks, but it certainly means a lot of extra work. Oh, well, the price one pays for not paying attention to web site security. I am also doing a significant amount of reading, intended of course to correct any security holes I may have on the site.

It’s so hot…

Global Average Temps

According to the NOAA, June 2010 has racked up to the hottest June on record globally since measurements were kept going back to 1880.

The combined average of land and ocean temperatures was

61.1?F. That is 1.22?F above the 20th century average of 59.9.

Areas such as the Midwest and Eastern US were far above normal while areas such as Scandinavia and Southern China were below normal. The average June temp in Spain made it the coolest on record in 13 years.

Don’t Cry for me Argentina!

Early this morning Argentina became the first country in Latin America to approve Marriage Equality. This also makes them the 10 nation to grant full Marriage Equality to it?s people.

Argentina?s senate voted 33-27 after nearly 14 hours of debate with a vote at about 4am local time to approve the law.

Argentina’s President Cristina Fern?ndez de Kirchner issued a statement prior to the vote stating she supported the bill and would sign it if passed. There was also speculation that their Supreme Court was about to issue a ruling in a pending case that would have legalized same sex marriage even if the senate had not approved the bill.

Even NOM?s chief fear monger wasn?t able to stop the advancement of equality and human dignity.

On a side note, I wonder how many Argentineans get tired of being connected to that Madonna song.

The Real ID Bomb

Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned / Nor hell a fury like a woman Gamer scorned.

In 1697, when William Congrave wrote that memorable quote in his play, ?The Mourning Bride?, he obviously didn?t include the part about gamers nor did he have us in mind. But the events of this week that began on Tuesday when community managers of the World of Warcraft forums announced in the forums that sometime shortly before Cataclysm (WoW?s 3rd expansion) goes live, a new forum system was going to be implemented in which people who choose to post on the forums will be required to do so using their Real ID which for most people is their real life first and last name. And while I’m sure that the brains that run Blizzard Entertainment expected some amount of blow back I don’t think they necessarily expected the hate bomb that exploded over what many saw as a huge violation of their privacy rights. Apparently Blizzard hadn?t been paying any attention to the rage that Facebook caused with it’s huge privacy violations.
