The Next War

March 19th, 2009

Through out the history of our nation, since it?s founding in the fire of revolution in 1776, we have spent more time at war through either actual fighting or in proxy wars, than we have at peace.

We have fought wars against almost every major European power, including ones who are now our allies, such as Britain, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, as well as nations that are still not so friendly such as Russia.

Star Trek Wins Big

image $76.5 million in it?s opening weekend. While it still has yet to make back it?s estimated $150 million dollar budget, it has been seen as a big success and huge boost to the 40 year old franchise. The movie ratings web site Rotten Tomatoes gave Star Trek a 95%.

The movie promises a fast pace, and lots of action and it solidly delivers on both. I saw the movie Thursday night at a special screening, as a large number of Iowa theaters were allowed to open it a day early. In an early screen where we see the Young James Kirk speeding down a dusty road in an old car, up in the corner of the screen the word ?Iowa? appears, letting everyone know the name of the place, and the entire theater broke out in cheers and applause.

From start to finish I loved the adventure. It was new and exciting and I think Abrams did a good job. While there are certainly bits and pieces of the story that interfere with the canon of 10 previous movies and 5 TV series, I have to admit I?m looking forward to where the story goes next. It?s rumored that Paramount has all ready given the green light for Star Trek XII and it is known that the cast originally signed on for the possibility of three movies. I wouldn?t mind seeing the Gorn on the big screen, but since it?s an alternate time line just about anything can happen.

Syked Out

The White House Correspondents Dinner has never really gone without some sort of controversial joke being uttered to the crowd, and this weekend proved to be no different when comedian Wanda Sykes suggested that Rush Limbaugh could have been the 20th hijacker who simply missed the plan because he was high. She then followed up by saying that she hoped his kidneys would fail. While I have no love for El’-Rushbo, the Apparent King of the GOP, I think Wanda overstepped the bounds of funny by bringing up 9/11.

It also appears that the White House agrees that the joke was in poor taste. When Press Secretary

Robert Gibbs was asked what Obama thought of the joke, he replied?

I don’t know how the guests get booked…I haven’t talked specifically with him, but my guess is, Jeff, I think there are a lot of topics that are better left for serious reflection rather than comedy. I think there’s no doubt 9/11 is part of that.
