To Mars and Back in 80 Days

February 10th, 2009

In 1873 Jules Verne published the novel “Around the World in 80 Days“, in which an English Gentleman attempts to circumnavigate the Earth on bet. At the time the story was taken as simple fiction.

In 1889 Nellie Bly actually succeeded in making the trip and did it in just 72 days.

Today the Space Shuttle can make the trip in about 90 minuets.

A new plasma based rocket engine system, named Vasimr, has just recently been approved for testing on the ISS in 2012. The new engine could make it possible to travel to Mars in as little as 39 days, making around trip voyage of less than 80 days.

could we finally be on the Brink.

Omnibus Bill Pork Breakdown

From Taxpayers for Common Sense… here is the pork breakdown in the Omnibus bill that was signed on Wednesday.
Now I understand that the pork was only a small part of the bill. But I feel it’s important to point this stuff out, because this is the standard operating procedure of our congress. They add this stuff to all sorts of bills hoping that the public won’t notice. $7 Billion here, $7 Billion there, it adds up pretty fast.
I’m also disappointed with Obama for signing the bill after both he and McCain pledged to work on earmark reform during the campaign. This is a very important missed opportunity, and I find the idea of him railing against earmarks as he signed the bill to be a tad hypocritical. I still proudly support Obama, but if I just sat silent and ignored my disappointment then I’d be just as guilty as all the Republicans and Democrats who railed against the earmarks in the bill but yet had their own earmarks in the bill.

Weakend Steele

Yesterday I posted parts of an interview with Michael Steele the RNC chairman done by GQ magazine.

Late yesterday Steele came under fire by Republicans and started back tracking. Ben Smith posts Steele’s statements in his blog at Politico

I am pro-life, always have been, always will be.

I tried to present why I am pro life while recognizing that my mother had a “choice” before deciding to put me up for adoption. I thank her every day for supporting life. The strength of the pro life movement lies in choosing life and sharing the wisdom of that choice with those who face difficult circumstances. They did that for my mother and I am here today because they did. In my view Roe vs. Wade was wrongly decided and should be repealed. I realize that there are good people in our party who disagree with me on this issue.

But the Republican Party is and will continue to be the party of life. I support our platform and its call for a Human Life Amendment. It is important that we stand up for the defenseless and that we continue to work to change the hearts and minds of our fellow countrymen so that we can welcome all children and protect them under the law.

Here is how Keith Olbermann put it last night on Countdown.
